Overall Review: You can't go wrong with either drive. It's possibly this was a fluke, but I've got to know down an egg for this. The WD Greenpower is basically silent, whether it be spin-up, spin-down, or accД¬ons: I experienced a disk failure in the first day of using my greenpower drives. The Samsung Ecogreen have a distinct whirl for spin up and spin down of the drives, and an audible click when first starting up. The WD is as close to silent as you can get. At idle, with platters spun down, the WD is just 1-2C hotter, a tie for all purposes. In my 4 bay raid array, when not in spindown, the WD sits at about 38-39C versus 32-34 for the Samsungs. Definitely runs a few degrees celsius hotter. So, compared to the Samsung Ecogreen 1TB, the WD Greenpower 1TB: At 5400 RPM, these drives easily can handle a 1080p/Bluray stream to at least 2 devices. I've run both the Samsung Ecogreen and now the WD Greenpower drives as storage/streaming drives. Many of us who have terrabytes of digital media are looking for purely mass depot drives, and not something to dump an OS on. Pros: This is a review for those who are looking to buy inexpensive, low heat, low noise 'Eco' drives to use for mass storage. It wont give you back your data if it dies, so make sure you are backing up! Some other manufacturers give 3 year or even 5 year warranties, but in the end what we care about is not so much the $90 drive, but the priceless memories stored on them. You can buy a 2 year warranty for $18 and in this case it might be worth it. In the end you take a shot in the dark with what you buy. As the larger drives push platter density and spindle speed into the stratosphere, it seems that the limitations of the conventional hard drive are perhaps hitting a ceiling? Or else quality control at the factory has been cut in this economic recession? I'd love a solid state drive, but new tech commands a price premium. Overall Review: Quality control does not seem to be confined to any one particular vendor, nor to any particular models. This might not be a negative since they are infact designed this way, but for those people who like redundancy (especially of 1TB of their important files) this means they will have problems. This means they are not at all ideal for setting up in a RAID array (even RAID 1). These drives have some sort of firmware on them so they save power by sleeping if they are not in use. If you know you'll use it/fill it up, wants to purchase two 500GB drives when you could get just one drive instead? With the industry pushing into 2TB drives now you'd think they'd have ironed out the bugs in 1TB drives. I talked to a friend of mine and he said that many 1TB drives have quality control issues. Seems like its an ideal solution.Д¬ons: Well, not so fast - is it really the ideal solution? I bought two, one has been Ok for a week but the other was DOA. These are also cheap - right now they can be had for $85-$90 online. This could be an ideal drive for you if your OS is on another drive and you add this to your system for more storage of music/movies/N0rP (Yeah, I said it!)/pictures. They don't really compete with 'desktop' drives as much as they make great storage bins. They also boast a nice 32MB buffer, and 1TB storage. In fact, many of the Phantom and caviar 1TB USB external drives use this particular drive inside their enclosure.

These are ideal in HTPC cases, or in a water cooled desktop where there is little airflow and or you are going for quietness, or in an external USB enclosure. Its a 'green' power drive, which means it has a slower spindle speed (close to 5400rpm) which reduces power consumption, noise and heat. Pros: Well, this drive has its own niche. The last 4 drives I bought were 7200.10's 320GB and they're LOUD and have a very obnoxious and seemingly random click (that sounds more like the head slamming the side of the drive than a seek) I'm not sure if it has anything to do with the purchase of Maxtor, but their quality of late has really sufferred. Seagate is still my drive of choice for SCSI/SAS, however in the SATA / desktop world I avoid seagate like the plague. I've been dissapointed with Seagate for a couple of years now, and they were once the only brand I would buy. Overall Review: I put two 1TB greens in a mirror on an ICH8R and I couldn't be happier. If you want cheap or quiet storage and performance isn't your main concern I would definitely recommend this drive! If you're looking for performance go with the Caviar Black for a bit more money. In addition, it has a 32MB cache which is good for a low-power drive. Pros: I've never in my life had such a quiet hard drive.
